On October 15, 2024, Dungannon hosted the impactful event *Hope for Our World*, organized by the United Nations Association Northern Ireland, under the esteemed auspices of the Mid-Ulster District Council. Held at the Hill of the O’Neill and Ranfurly House, this event brought together students from Integrated College Dungannon.
Distinguished Speakers
Among the distinguished speakers were Manuel Carta, a former Commissioner of the Italian Red Cross and now an Emergency Response Volunteer with the British Red Cross, and Laura Hampton, an intrepid adventurer from County Armagh.

Manuel Carta delivered a powerful presentation titled “Where Chaos Meets Hope,” sharing harrowing yet inspiring stories from his humanitarian missions,

including emergency responses to earthquakes, floods, and the rescue of migrants in the Mediterranean.
Today, Carta serves as a multilingual instructor for the UN World Food Programme in Rome, emphasizing the critical importance of humanitarian work.
Laura Hampton, on the other hand, recounted her extraordinary journey sailing around the world for charity, benefiting UNICEF. Her participation in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race helped raise over £440,000 for vulnerable children. Her presentation, “From Orchards to Oceans,” captivated the audience, prompting enthusiastic questions from students eager to learn more about her adventures.
Impact on the Audience
The event made a profound impact on the local community, inspiring students to engage in awareness and training activities within their schools and neighborhoods. The testimonies from Carta and Hampton stimulated deep reflection on global challenges and the vital role each individual can play in making a difference.
A heartfelt thank you goes to the United Nations Association NI and the Mid-Ulster District Council, particularly to Councillor Eugene McConnell, for welcoming students to this significant event.
