An Analysis of Electrical Current Flow Through Rescuers in Direct Contact With Patients During Biphasic External Defibrillation
All BLSD – PBLSD instructors have consistently used the AED message that prompts “stand clear of the patient” just before a shock to remind and alert students about the dangers of touching a patient during defibrillation. This is because contact can be hazardous, potentially resulting in electric shock or even fatal injury. Some videos available online, often edited for dramatic effect, depict scenarios where individuals inadvertently touch a patient during defibrillation and subsequently faint or become unconscious due to the shock. However, this study by the American Heart Association demonstrates that the actual risk is not as severe as previously thought. The findings suggest that minimizing interruptions in chest compressions can significantly improve survival rates.
